Captain Jacob Hiles has operated a large fishing charter out of Virginia Beach for the past 20 years. But after a defamatory news article published by CNN in the fall of 2022, Hiles business, and his ability to provide for his family have been destroyed.
Even though CNN knew that Mr. Hiles did not take place in any rioting, that he fully cooperated with law enforcement and that it was never even alleged that Mr. Hiles took part in violent conduct or that he was involved in organizing a revolution, CNN went ahead and published a story with the heading Man wanted to start ‘a revolution’ on January 6 referring to Jacob Hiles. CNN published the story with full knowledge that Mr. Hiles was not accused of organizing, starting, or even contributing toward a “revolution” but in a world where clickbait equals dollars CNN dismissed any concern that such a misleading heading and story could destroy a person’s life.
In the days and weeks after the article was published Hiles received confirmed credible death threats, harassment and hundreds of questions from friends and associates who saw the article. Even Hiles’ 14 year old daughter was mocked and shamed at her school. Almost immediately after the publication of the article for no apparent reason Mr. Hiles had his Coast Guard Fishing License suspended for 9 months, completely preventing him from making a living.
CNN was never concerned with the collateral consequences that might occur to a human being from being held in a false light by one of the largest news organizations in the world. Instead, they used any chance they could to create clickbait with January 6 stories in attempt to push their “right wing revolution” story line. In a country founded on an individual’s right to peacefully protest the actions of the government the almighty dollar available in the 24-hour news cycle proved more powerful than our Constitution.
Jacob and his attorneys are fighting back, they are committed to clearing his name and holding CNN accountable, but the cost to battle with the high-priced team of lawyers for CNN continues to grow rapidly, please consider making a donation toward Jacob’s legal fees.
